GPS units

Bush Search and Rescue uses GPS (Global Positioning System) units in the field as navigation aids to supplement maps and compass navigation.


BSAR acknowledges and thanks Department of Justice Victoria and Bushwalking Victoria for providing funding for BSAR safety clothing and new GPS units

Two types of GPS units are currently in use:

  1. Oregan 600T with maps (purchased 2014)

Oregon 600 GPS units (with topo maps) can be bought online from Ryda, an Australian supplier [here]

 

  1. Garmin Vista HCx with maps (purchased 2007)

Two GPS units have been set aside for the purpose of training and familiarisation and the other units are ready for use on a search.

BSAR members can borrow a Oregan 600T or Garmin Vista HCx for up to two weeks at a time. Contact Jim Grelis on 9836 0127 (h) to arrange to borrow one of these units.
