Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) can be carried and used to issue a distress alert via satellite in the event an emergency occurs in the field. They are sometimes referred to as Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) though this type of Beacon is intended for Marine Use.
